A new report that looks at the state of nonprofits in the state of Texas will be out soon. The organizations behind it have just released a small teaser to whet our appetites.
Back in 2019, two nonprofits, United Ways of Texas (UWT) and OneStar, partnered on a study called the Built For Texas Report. They are updating it now, but in the meantime, they have released a preview. According to their research:
Texas is home to 130,000 nonprofits. That is an increase of 22% between 2015 and 2022.
Most nonprofits are small...too small to support a staff. The study finds that nearly three-quarters of nonprofits have a budget under $50,000 per year.
Even though the number of nonprofits jumped, revenue did not. The study indicates that revenue only grew by 13% over the seven-year period, which is not enough to keep up with inflation. The preview points out that the growth wasn't uniform either, meaning some areas and types of nonprofits could have seen a loss.
We'll keep an eye out for the final report and share it once we have it.
