Much Anticipated News Organization Hits Houston

Writer: Ken WellsKen Wells

It was one year ago when the announcement came that a new nonprofit news outlet would come to Houston. It didn’t have leadership, any staff or even a name. However, it did have a $20 million commitment from Arnold Ventures, the Houston Endowment and the Kinder Foundation, among others.

This month, the Houston Landing made its debut as an online news organization. It is still a work in progress. It has a skeleton staff and a long list of open positions, but it does have a major news scoop about the shocking percentage of people suffering from mental illness who die in area jails every year.

Note for Development Professionals - Houston Landing is a nonprofit and plans to offer its content online at no charge, which means it will need to raise a lot of money. The website lists four fundraising openings: Chief Development Officer, Director of Memberships, Major Gifts Officer and Vice President of Corporate Sponsorships.
